Review Great Movie "The Fault in Our Stars"

Movie Review: "The Fault in Our Stars"

"The Fault in Our Stars" is a romantic drama staring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Augustus - two teenagers who reluctantly forge a relationship. Their relationship is affected by the fact that they have both been diagnosed with cancer and know that their life is not guaranteed. Despite the risk of loving and losing, Hazel and Augustus decide to be together for as long as they have left.

Plot Summary

"The Fault in Our Stars" opens with 17-year-old Hazel Lancaster meeting a boy named Augustus Waters. The teens soon discover they have one thing in common - both of their lives have been affected by cancer. Hazel tells Augustus that she is suffering from thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs - a condition that is by all accounts going to be fatal. In turn, Augustus shares that he had cancer when he was younger, but it is now in remission.

Shortly after meeting, Hazel and Augustus agree to read each other's favorite books. Augustus gives Hazel a book called "The Price of Dawn," and the story ends up deeply affecting her. She shares how she is troubled by the fact that the book does not explain what happened to the main character - a girl who, like Hazel, was diagnosed with cancer as a teenager.

Augustus secretly writes to the author of the book, Peter Van Houten, asking him for answers about the book's ending. Eventually, the author agrees to give Augustus answers if he comes to meet him in person. Augustus arranges a trip to Van Houten's home in Amsterdam, but right before they are to leave, Hazel's lungs fill with fluid and she is admitted to the hospital. After she recovers, Hazel and Augustus travel to Amsterdam to meet Van Houten, but he turns out to be an angry alcoholic who refuses to give them answers about the book.

When they return home, Augustus reveals that he recently found out that his cancer has returned and is in an advanced state. Hazel assumed she would be the first one to die, so she struggles with her feelings for Augustus. In the end, Hazel finds answers to her past and future from an unlikely source: none other than Van Houten.

Cast

"The Fault in Our Stars" is expected to be one of the best movies of the year, partly due to the great on-screen chemistry between Woodley and Elgort. Both characters face cancer with the determination not to fall into depression or accept the sympathies of others. In that way, both actors create characters that are altogether very similar. However, Woodley's character is strong on the outside, but afraid and vulnerable on the inside. Her hidden frailty is offset by Elgort's character who is sure of himself and Hazel. Their roles vis-à-vis each other are reversed toward the end of the film when Augustus suffers a relapse, and both actors make the switch effortlessly.

Film Analysis

"The Fault in Our Stars" is a heartbreaking story that should seem depressing. However, the way the lead characters refuse to play into the image of a teenage cancer patient allows the film to focus on more than just their impending deaths. Additionally, Hazel's reluctance to forge a relationship with Augustus saves the film from moving too fast. The teens meet in one of the opening scenes, but they do not confess their love for one another for some time. This makes the evolution of the relationship the focus of the film, rather than the fact that both characters are affected by cancer.

The film is faithful to the novel it is based on, and that's not a bad thing. The film captures the essence of the characters and stays true to the story without altering any of the major details. Although this means there are no major surprises or plot twists, the story does not require any. The only real change is that the conflict with Van Houten is played up a bit in the film. This actually makes the story more intriguing, since there is no other real conflict between the other characters.

One of the best aspects of the movie is the script. With the movie that spends so much time watching two characters talk, a great script is absolutely necessary. The screenwriters in this case deliver. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, writers of the screenplays for "500 Days of Summer" and "The Spectacular Now," bring the words from the book to life in the film, but also make some great changes. Hazel and Augustus banter back and forth constantly throughout the movie, even when one or the other is in the hospital, and the witty conversation breaks up the sadness at the heart of the story.

"The Fault in Our Stars" tells the story of young love in an unconventional way. The characters go through many of the ups and downs of falling in love, all while dealing with impending death. The witty, light-hearted script and the development of the characters takes a film which could have been tragic and instead makes it poignant. Although there are some very sad moments in the film, "The Fault in Our Stars" has a very uplifting ending that is definitely worth seeing.

Kendall Jenner's dress was doing a lot

(CNN) -- Call it keeping up with the next generation of Kardashians.

OK, technically, Kendall Jenner is not a Kardashian. But the 18-year-old is a half-sibling of the Kardashian sisters and can be frequently seen on the E! reality series "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

She also seems to be taking after her older sisters in stirring up buzz via her fashion sense.

On Sunday, Jenner and her 16-year-old sister, Kylie, who were hosting the 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards, appeared on the red carpet before the Canadian awards show. Though much has been written about their hosting (not all good), even more has been said about Kendall's red carpet dress, a Fausto Puglisi number that featured splits up to the thigh.

Jenner's pelvic bones were plainly visible and gave the impression that she was not wearing any underwear. Probably only her stylist knows for sure.

Jenner was proud of the fuss. The aspiring model tweeted a pic of the dress, saying, "Why do one slit when you can do TWO!?"

The Kardashian press machine kicks back into high gear this coming weekend when "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" premieres its eighth season on Sunday.

In new promo shots released over the weekend, the show's 10 featured family members pose happily wearing spring colors and smiling faces. But there's one person who's prominently absent from photos: Kim Kardashian's boyfriend and father of her unborn baby, Kanye West.

So could this mean that West is not going to appear in the upcoming season? It's hard to tell, but he's clearly not going to be a main cast member. West did appear on camera during Season 7 though, which aired last fall.

Sources close to the production tell omg! that West was extremely resistant to appear on the show in any capacity last season. In fact, if he had his preference, he wouldn't appear at all … ever. But he relented under a two-front assault by Kim and Kris, agreeing to appear just a few times. The one stipulation was that E! wasn't allowed to promote him as a regular cast member.

For this upcoming season, West has been even more hesitant our sources add, since Kim's pregnancy will be one of the key plot points. As of a month ago, he wasn't slated to be on camera at all this season. It's one of the reasons he's been spending so much time in Paris.

Up until a few weeks ago, he was adamant about not having the baby appear on the series, but now that appears to be up for debate. There are reports out that he agreed to be on camera for this weekend's baby shower taping. Omg! has reached out to reps for both E! and West to ask about his participation in the show this season.

But maybe West has rubbed off on Kim in a good way?

While recently discussing her plans to leave "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" at some point in the foreseeable future, Kim told executive producer Ryan Seacrest, "Kanye has taught me a lot about privacy. I’m ready to be less open with my relationships and I realize everyone doesn’t need to know everything.”

Still, these new photos do nothing to quell the rumors that Kim and her beau are going through rocky times, as the impending birth of their first child nears.

Perhaps the biggest tease for the upcoming season is the gender reveal of Kim's baby, which will happen during the season premiere. E! released a teaser clip of the doctor's-office moment last week.

Whether or not the KimYe baby will appear on the various incarnations of E!'s Kardashian reality programming is a hotly debated topic. Although Kim at first emphasized that her baby would not show up on the small screen, she later loosened up her stance a bit.

The ballerina-inspired baby shower invites went out just last week. Kim and Kanye are refusing gifts though, and are instead asking that donations be made to Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

West seemed to have a rough weekend professionally, as plans to project a teaser for the music video of his upcoming song "New Slaves" on the side of buildings in Houston were reportedly foiled. A similar attempt later failed at the Alamo in San Antonio.

His new album "Yeezus" comes out June 18, right around the time that Kim is due. Let's hope he keeps his head up as the couple heads into a very busy June!

The new season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" premieres this Sunday, June 2, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The Enduring Sound of U2 : Classic Music

Coming out of the age of punk and just before the New Wave sensation of the 80s, a little-known band out of Dublin began to carve a niche with bold, fresh-sounding songwriting, emotion-filled vocals and chiming, percussive guitar sounds. This quartet had begun in the tiniest venues available to them, and--by their own admission--they got off to a bit of a rough, sonically.

Forging ahead, they began to arrive at songwriting that encapsulated a streamlined signature sound, with Bono's forceful tenor, Larry Mullen Jr.'s tribal-tinged drumming, Adam Clayton's bedrock bass lines, and The Edge's muted, echo-washed guitar parts. The U2 sound had been born, and while it would change over the coming decades, it always stood out among the pop and rock music surrounding it on rock radio, MTV and stadiums around the world.

As the 80s wore on, U2 began to refine their signature sound and songwriting, with classic rock staples in 'Pride (In The Name of Love)', 'Where the Streets Have No Name', 'With Or Without You' and 'Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'. Culminating with the massive success of the Joshua Tree album, U2 rounded out the 80s with an unbeatable sound, a mega-selling album and tour, and an indelible print in the annals of classic rock.

As the 90s dispatched with hair metal and mullets, drummer Larry Mullen told Bono he wouldn't be around if they had to keep playing only the hits and creating the same sound. The rest of the band agreed, and set up shop in Germany to record the band's first effort in the new decade. 1991's 'Achtung Baby' was a radical departure from the vintage U2 sound, with bristling, edgy industrial sounds and raucous songwriting. A gargantuan stadium tour followed, and the spectacle of Zoo TV had begun. Sitting in the stands of Dodger Stadium, looking at three stories of video screens and an impossibly huge stage lit by floating car headlights, it was almost hard to believe I was at a U2 show.

As the years wore on, U2 would continue to reinvent and augment their sound without ever sounding gimicky or forced. Every change seemed artful and organic, and as listeners look back over three decades of great classic rock, this Irish quartet has helped shape the sound of pop and rock while remaining on the cutting edge of live and studio performances all along the way.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg updated his status to "married" on Saturday.
Zuckerberg and 27-year-old Priscilla Chan tied the knot at a small ceremony at his Palo Alto, Calif., home, capping a busy week for the couple, according to a guest authorized to speak for the couple. The person spoke only on the condition of anonymity.
Zuckerberg took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history Friday. And Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28, the person said.
The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years, the person said.
Zuckerberg designed the ring featuring "a very simple ruby," according to the person.
The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's backyard before fewer than 100 guests, including Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.
The guests all thought they were coming to celebrate Chan's graduation but were told after they arrived that the event was in fact a wedding.
"Everybody was shocked," the guest said.
Rather than his trademark hoodie, Zuckerberg wore a suit for the ceremony, while his bride wore a traditional wedding dress.
Food was served family-style and included dishes from the couple's favorite Palo Alto sushi restaurant. The two had been planning the marriage for months but were waiting until Chan had graduated to hold the wedding, the guest said.
The timing wasn't tied to the IPO, since the date the company planned to go public was a "moving target," the guest said.
Even after the IPO, Zuckerberg remains Facebook's single largest shareholder, with 503.6 million shares. And he controls the company with 56 percent of its voting stock.
The site, which was born in a dorm room eight years ago, has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people.
Zuckerberg founded Facebook at Harvard in 2004.
He was selected as Time's Person of the Year in 2010, at age 26.
Zuckerberg grew up in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri teenager who had described the slaying of a young neighbor girl as an "ahmazing" thrill made an emotional apology Wednesday to the girl's family and was sentenced to a potential lifetime in prison.

Moments before her sentence was imposed, 18-year-old Alyssa Bustamante rose from her chair — with shackles linking her ankles and holding her hands to her waist — and turned to face the family of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, whom she confessed to killing in October 2009.

"I really am extremely, very sorry for everything. I know words," she said, pausing to take a deep breath and struggling to compose herself, "can never be enough, and they can never adequately describe how horribly I feel for all of this."

She later added: "If I could give my life to get her back I would. I'm sorry."

Elizabeth's mother, Patty Preiss, who on the first day of Bustamante's sentencing hearing called her an "evil monster" and declared "I hate her," sat silently, staring forward as Bustamante's finished her apology.

Cole County Circuit Judge Pat Joyce then sentenced Bustamante to the maximum possible sentence for second-degree murder — life in prison with the possibility of parole. She ordered the teenager to serve a consecutive 30-year term for armed criminal action, a charge resulting from her use of a knife to slit the throat and stab Elizabeth after she had strangled her into unconsciousness.

Elizabeth's family declined to comment about the sentencing, as did Bustamante's family.
There were no immediate indications that Bustamante planned to appeal the sentence.

Bustamante originally had been charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty last month to the lesser charges to avoid a trial and the possibility of spending her life in an adult prison with no chance of release.

Bustamante was 15 years old at the time of Elizabeth's murder in the small town of St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City. Evidence presented during her hearing revealed that Bustamante had dug a shallow grave in the woods several days in advance, then used her younger sister to lure Elizabeth out of her home with an invitation to play. Bustamante, who had hidden a knife in a backpack, said she had a surprise for Elizabeth in the forest. The surprise turned out to be her demise.

During her two-day sentencing hearing, prosecutors referred repeatedly to an entry Bustamante wrote in her journal on Oct. 21, 2009 — the night of Elizabeth's death — in which she admitted to having just killed someone.

"I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead," Bustamante wrote in her diary, which was read in court by a handwriting expert. "I don't know how to feel atm. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."

Bustamante then left for a youth dance at a Mormon church her family attended while hundreds of volunteers began a two-day hunt for the dead girl. Although she initially lied to authorities about Elizabeth's whereabouts, Bustamante eventually confessed to police and led them to Elizabeth's leaf-covered shallow grave.

Defenses attorneys had argued for leniency after presenting evidence from family members and mental health experts about Bustamante's troubled childhood. Bustamante was born to teenage, drug-abusing parents; her father was imprisoned and her mother abandoned her, leaving her in the legal custody of her grandmother.

After a suicide attempt on Labor Day 2007 as she was starting eighth grade, Bustamante was prescribed the antidepressant Prozac. Her dosage had been increased just two weeks before Elizabeth's death. A defense psychiatrist testified that the medication could have made Bustamante moodier and more violent and contributed to the murder — a theory rejected by a different psychiatrist testifying for prosecutors.

Charlie Moreland, one of Bustamante's attorneys, described the sentence imposed Wednesday as "a harsh punishment."

"This was a child who had been spiraling out of control, but has treatable conditions," Moreland said.
Under Missouri guidelines, Bustamante would have to serve 35 years and 5 months in prison before she is eligible for parole, said Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Cline. It's also possible that the more than two years Bustamante spent in jail while awaiting her sentencing could be counted toward that time.

After spending several weeks at a diagnostic prison, Bustamante could be placed in either one of Missouri's two female prisons or sent out of state. Cline said department officials also would evaluate whether Bustamante should be kept separate from other adult woman inmates.

She was fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet to monitor her movements and ensure she stays at home, except as allowed by the court, Whitmore said.

The actress was sentenced May 11 to 120 days in jail, but overcrowding at the facility and state rules could reduce the time she must be confined to her Venice, California, home, the sheriff’s office said earlier.

Lohan, 24, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor theft charge after she apparently left a Venice jewelry store in January wearing a gold and diamond necklace she had not paid for.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner gave Lohan until June 17 to begin the sentence, but she reported early at which time the jail was full.

“Because of budget constraints and because we’re under a federal consent decree that requires us to curb our overcrowding situation, nonviolent offenders, lesser crimes, get 20% of their sentence,” the spokesman explained.

Sautner remarked that the discounts on the sentences “seem to be like shopping at Costco.”

As part of Lohan’s sentence, Sautner also ordered that the actress remain on supervised probation until she completes 480 hours of community service.

Lohan’s four years in and out of court — and sometimes jail — started with two drunken driving arrests in 2007. Since then, she’s spent more than eight months in substance abuse rehabilitation programs. After her sentencing, the court released a probation report that said the actress “appears to be continuing to struggle with substance abuse issues.”

“It would appear that the defendant’s criminal conduct is increasing in seriousness and severity,” the probation report said, yet it suggested she serve her sentence on probation and not in jail.

Lohan tested positive for alcohol use, a violation of probation rules, in February, the report said.

It also revealed that the drug test failure last August, which resulted in a jail sentence and court-ordered rehab, involved cocaine and amphetamines.
Lohan was not at the May 11 hearing, but her lawyer entered a no-contest plea to the misdemeanor theft charge on her behalf.

“I am glad to be able to put this past me and move on with my life and my career,” Lohan said in a written statement released by her lawyer. “I support the judge’s decision and hold myself accountable for being in this situation.

It was a cinematic moment ten years and eight movies in the making.  A scene fans were dying to see, and one the actors were dreading to film.  It was the long-awaited kiss between Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2."

Fans all over the world got to see the epic smooch when the movie played this summer, bringing in $1.3 billion dollars (the most of any "Harry Potter" movie).  But now for the first time you can take a look behind the scenes to see how stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson handled the dramatic scene.  Take a look at an exclusive clip from the bonus features of the upcoming Blu-ray release.

In the video, David Yates, the director of the last four "Harry Potter" films, explains that the two actors had different approaches to filming the kiss.  He said that since Emma Watson didn't want to have to do multiple takes of the scene, she was "going to get it right the first time."  He tells how he could see her psyche herself up before the camera rolled, but Rupert Grint hadn't worked up to the same level of intensity.  "I think Rupert wasn't quite expecting it," Yates said, "and then she just went for it." But then the kiss was quickly broken as the two friends burst out laughing.

While it might seem like kissing isn't a bad way to spend a work day, Grint and Watson explained to the UK's TelegraphTV why the scene was so difficult for them.  "It feels weird saying this, because I'm sure loads of guys are just really jealous," Grint said. "I mean, she's lovely.  I just felt so wrong, really.  Kissing this person I've known since she was nine."

Watson said she also felt quite a bit of pressure to please the fans who had been waiting so long for the kiss to happen.  She said, "Can you imagine, building up to a kiss for, like, ten years?  We've been building up for this kiss for a decade.  How am I going to do this justice?  I felt like it's the most anticipated kiss of all time.  So, it was intense."

There will be many more behind-the-scenes secrets revealed in the bonus features of the upcoming Blu-ray.  In the "Maximum Movie Mode," actor Matthew Lewis (who played Neville Longbottom) hosts a feature-length look at the making of the film's stand-out scenes.  The Blu-ray will also have a conversation between star Daniel Radcliffe and author J.K. Rowling where they discuss how "Potter" has changed both of their lives.  And it will present deleted scenes, with moments that were left out of the final film.

While every other Fall TV show starts in mid to late September, and some even as late as October (dammit, Dexter), we’re in luck because one of the best shows on TV starts early. This Tuesday, Sept. 6, the fourth season of FX’s Sons Of Anarchy begins. If you’re a fan of great serial TV drama, SOA is definitely for you. In a nutshell, it’s The Sopranos on motorcycles, and even using that description lessens the value of this thrill–ride.

Even if you haven’t been onboard for the first three seasons, now is actually a great time to jump on. The entire motorcycle club from the fictional town of Charming, California went to jail at the end of last season and now, they’re out and ready to be back on the streets.

Why You’re Not Watching
It’s Not Easy to Jump Into Without Watching Every Season

Nowadays, if you don’t start watching a series right from get-go, it’s hard to latch on. If you start late, there are already so many storylines and characters you have to learn about. Can you imagine watching Lost without ever seeing episode one? The mythology is simply too overwhelming, and Sons has its fair share of mythology. On top of the storylines that are on the air, Sons have about three or four different storylines underneath the surface; they’re barely mentioned, but they’re there. And it’s when they come to the forefront that the show is at its best. Remember, this is a motorcycle club that dates back to the late sixties with MCs stretching as far as Ireland (where most of Season Three took place), and that’s a lot of backstory to take in.

Sons’ Storylines are Not For the Faint of Heart
If you’ve read the memoir, No Angel, by Jay Dobbins, or Hell’s Angels, by Hunter S. Thompson, then you know how violent and insane the world of motorcycle clubs can be. That aspect comes out in a big way on the FX series. We witness rival gangs, murders, rapes, police action, crazed ATF agents, fighting within the club, kidnapping, and I’m leaving a whole slew of stuff out, but it’s all there and it’s all so raw. Creator Kurt Sutter, along with the entire cast and crew leave their egos at the door and create such a realistic, violent world for these characters to play in. But if your stomach – and in some cases, your tear ducts – can’t handle the madness, then go find a fluffy cookie-cutter procedural where the good guys are truly good and the bad guys get brought to court justice at the end of the hour. Sons runs on outlaw justice and it’s usually served with unrelenting and unmerciful bloodshed.

Motorcycle Clubs Are Uncharted Television Territory
MCs aren’t limited to the famed Hell’s Angels; they’re all over. And if you don’t know about the MC lifestyle, it’s likely pretty foreign to you. Unlike the mafia, or the government, it’s a world that hasn’t been as marketed over the years, and that is by design of the MCs themselves. These are clubs, and they are strictly for members only. For many people, even fellow motorcycle riders, it’s a world that you either don’t know about or don’t want to know about. Often, Sons can be a bit of a scary show, because many of the storylines are 100 percent plausible.

Bikes Sons of AnarchyWhat You’re Missing
The Action Literally Never Stops

Whether it’s a gunfight, a fistfight, the boys riding their choppers, or just intense dialogue, there’s narrowly a moment to breathe when watching Sons. Like any great action movie, the stories usually warrant the action that stems from them. For those who aim to start watching from the beginning, must-see scenes include the Sons blowing up a factory in pilot, the race to save Jax’s son in the final episode of Season Two, and the prison brawl between Clay and Jax in episode seven of Season Two. Where The Sopranos spent a lot of time talking about the impending violence without really showing it, Sons of Anarchy walks the walk and talks the talk.

Amazing Performances from an Amazing Cast
An ensemble piece like Sons of Anarchy needs to have a strong cast; each member must be capable of hitting scenes right out the park. Sons has that ten-fold. Particular stand-outs are Charlie Hunnam, who plays Jackson “Jax” Teller with a tortured, soulful mindset and dirty, gritty exterior; Ron Perlman plays club president, Clay Morrow, with duplicitous intent in every single scene; and then there’s Katey Sagal, who should serve as a blueprint on how typecast actors can stop being typecast. Her character, Gemma Teller-Morrow, is so far removed from the rambunctious redhead, Peggy Bundy, from Married…With Children that it’s downright scary. If I didn’t know better, I’d never guess both characters are played by the same actress.

Decades-old Backstories Rule
Trust me, you don’t need to know about the history of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original (SAMCRO), but knowing the backstory does help you enjoy the show a little more. Don’t worry; you won’t need to read up on any books, there are a slew of expository scenes in several episodes that paint a clear picture of everything that’s going on in the series.

The Bottom Line
There’s a line in the Metallica song, “Motorbreath,” that goes: “It’s hard and it’s heavy and dirty and mean.” That’s one part of the show, another part of the series is its Shakespearean influence–the series is a modern day Macbeth. Sons pulls no punches with its stories, its acting, or its twisted sense of humor. If you like your TV to be gritty and soulful, with a twinge Americana, Sons of Anarchy is most definitely for you.
