The French striker's only goal in all six games, four of them against defending champions West Germany. It is a record of the highest number of goals ever scored by a player in the World Cup tournament. This record still survive today.

Italy is one of the elite teams in the World Cup thanks to their achievements in the history of the tournament. They are always favored, but the interval between one title to another there is a very long time. After winning the World Cup in 1934 and 1938, Italy had to wait for a third title to 44 years (1982).

Ernie Brandts is the Dutch national team player and has competed in 28 international matches. The legendary defender scored five goals at the 1978 World Cup. In the second-round match against Italy, he became the only player in history to score a goal for both teams in one game.
